The NAAB Master of Architecture (MArch) degree program at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University has awarded their 2024 AIA Medal for Academic Excellence to Ian Wardowski in recognition of extraordinary academic achievement.
For more than a century, AIA has provided a medal of excellence to the top graduating students in National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) accredited degrees, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, or Doctor of Architecture.
The award for students in architecture was begun in 1914 by a resolution adopted by the AIA Board. Today, for more than 100 schools annually submit the name of one graduate of a BArch, MArch, or DArch program, who displays “general excellence” throughout his or her academic career.
Originally from the east side of Michigan, Ian moved west to attend Ferris State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and Sustainability. He then completed his Master of Architecture degree from Kendall College of Art and Design here in Grand Rapids.
Ian’s interest in architecture started in high school, working as a contractor’s assistant during the summer, gaining experience in everything from electrical to plumbing, framing, demolition, and much more. Throughout college, he interned for a few local firms, including Mathison|Mathison Architects most recently, before joining the team full-time as an Architectural Designer. Ian was drawn to MMA after experiencing our collaborative nature firsthand, and because he felt his values aligned with MMA’s mission.
Ian will be formally recognized and honored at the upcoming AIA Grand Rapids 2024 Honor Awards Celebration on October 30, 2024.
