University of Michigan Football is larger than life with a rich tradition that celebrates hard work, dedication and determination. The Schembechler Hall renovation and 7,000 SF addition showcases that tradition by creating a strong, dynamic presence in the center of the athletic campus. A curvilinear building addition and “wrapper” consisting of traditional brick and limestone integrates Schembechler with the athletic campus by unifying it with its neighbors, Yost Ice Arena to the north and Al Glick Field House to the south. As a result, the materials, proportions and rhythm of the entire athletic campus create streetscape continuity that strengthens and further solidifies the Michigan tradition.
A cast bronze statue of Coach Bo Schembechler honors his legacy and welcomes all who enter with his iconic quote: “Those who stay will be champions”. The oval assembly space of the glass-walled Margaret Dow Towsley Sports Museum helps define flow as exhibits and displays document all things Michigan from the Big House to Heisman Trophies. Displays range from nooks built into the exterior wall to free standing cases that echo the building’s shape. Scores from all of Michigan’s wins are etched on footballs to create a towering win wall topped by a high-tech programmable video screen that morphs from transparent views to color video to the iconic Block M. Interactive technology and programmable displays throughout entertain, inform and educate visitors about UofM football legends.
The flowing form of the second floor recruit lounge immerses students in Michigan’s winning tradition as the upper level of the Win Wall exhibit surrounds the lounge. Simply put, Go Blue!
