“ADAPTING AN ICONIC BRAND TO A NEW MARKET”
Slows Bar-B-Q is an established food icon in the Detroit food scene looking to expand to the growing Grand Rapids market. In Detroit, Slows and their owners invested in the community through careful rehabilitation and salvage of existing properties.
The Grand Rapids design aimed to achieve that same authenticity in a white box, in addition to serving as the test run for the "grab-n-go" business model.
The project was designed to instil curiosity with elements that invite market visitors to come in. A reclaimed wood cieling feature extends from the market enrty to the back of the bar drawing the eye through the restaurant. The sign wraps the corner of the entry opening breaking down the portal and extending the slows brand and feel into the market.
Wood was reclaimed locally in grand rapids for much of the millwork complimented by fabricated metals to acheive an industrial palette which supports durability and cleanability. The scale, color and texture of the wood changes to provide contrast in space and define architectural elements as well as environmental graphics.
From trash cans to tables to custom tap holders everything in the space was designed and custom fabricated to support the authentic feel slows was looking for. The sensitivity and craftsmanship of the space supports the made from scratch quality their food has to offer.
