Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Greenleaf Trust is a privately-held wealth management firm with offices in Kalamazoo, Birmingham, Traverse City, Petoskey, and most recently, Grand Rapids. The company wished to establish an office in Grand Rapids and selected a vacant 4,500-square-foot space within the historic 25 Ottawa building owned by Catalyst Development. The design team was challenged to create a high-end, tailored interior aesthetic complimenting the company’s existing locations. It was also important to illuminate the character of downtown’s modern corporate culture and Greenleaf Trust’s family values.
Catalyst Development acquired the building in early 2016 and began working with designers to create an upscale office environment for Greenleaf Trust. Original timber framing, load bearing brick walls, and exposed wood ceilings reveal the building’s 1904 character. Carefully placed supporting design elements highlight the structure, such as a living plant wall and materials with rich tones and green accents from the company’s brand.
Custom millwork and lighting elements, as well as a reclaimed wood wall in the main conference room, bring texture and importance to the new space. Utility services are routed under the floor to minimize the visual impact and present a clean, contemporary feel.
Employees benefit from the flexibility of an open office environment; work areas vary between private offices, benching work stations, and a collaborative area with flexible furniture adjacent to a centrally-located kitchen. Visual transparency and open connections between the technology-rich work spaces promote teamwork. To accommodate client meetings, conference rooms contain phase-changing switchglass, allowing rooms to become opaque when needed.
Greenleaf Trust’s new office opened in November of 2016. In addition to its six private offices, two conference rooms, three open work areas, and collaboration area and cafe, additional open space is intended for future offices as the company continues to grow.
