Allegan Lake Residence
Allegan, Michigan \ 3,990 SF \ Completed: Summer, 2011
Sited on the quiet shore of Lake Allegan, this 3,990 square foot home is designed as a vacation retreat for clients from urban Chicago to relax, escape, and entertain friends. The house is organized into a linear bar to take advantage of the width of the site and also provide as many spaces as possible with views and access out to the water.
The house is composed of two elements: a large gray clad box containing the living and sleeping functions, and an inserted cedar clad cube containing the entry and kitchen spaces. The warm tones of the wood are welcoming while allowing for a seamless integration into its surroundings.
The generous living space with glass on both ends anchors the main floor, with the kitchen and dining functions spinning off the open plan. Screen porch and media rooms flank those public areas. The living room spills onto an outdoor deck, reaching out into the water’s edge through wide sliding glass doors that effectively minimize barriers when open. Two stories of glass on both sides of the living areas fills the living spaces with natural light at all times of the day.
The upper level holds the sleeping functions of the residence. The master suite, accessible by traversing a bridge over the two story high living area, is deliberately located on the east end to allow morning light to permeate into the bath and bedroom. On the west end of the home, a large sleeping porch will capture sunsets and views over the water. Guest bedrooms fill the space between, each provided with lake views framed by the natural vegetation. The bridge serves to create privacy for the master suite from the guest bedrooms.
The Allegan Lake Residence is a modern vacation retreat designed to provide a secluded, tranquil, and relaxing escape from an urban life for its owners.
