As part of Stair Week West Michigan, we are pleased to invite you to a leadership breakfast on September 10th at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
Stairs not only promote physical activity, health and wellness, but also provide a greener alternative to taking the elevator. We are grateful for the tremendous contribution from the Health Departments of Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties and the respective United Way in the three counties - United Way of the Lakeshore, Heart of West Michigan United Way and Greater Ottawa County United Way. Their partnership with design and building organizations is much appreciated. Joining us to extend this invitation are Dana Friis-Hansen, Director & CEO of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Renae Hesselink, Stair Week West Michigan Event Chair, Rachel Hood, President of WMEAC, and Joyce Lee, Founder of Stair Week. Please see exemplar projects in the USGBC Blog.
According to national research on health promoting architecture, six studies evaluated the relationship between people’s perception of the environment and physical activity. Overall, the median improvement in some aspect of physical activity was 35 percent given a perceived safer, inviting environment. In active building design research, men who climbed at least 20 floors per week (four floors per work day) can lower their risk of stroke and death from all causes by 20 percent. Graphic images prompting healthy behavior have been shown to motivate stair users, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The message in the signage “Get Healthy, Save the Earth, Take the Stairs!” was launched Earth Week last year. This year, Governor Snyder has given us a Stair Week Proclamation.
