Creating space to empower is Thom’s philosophy.  He believes that craft is the conduit to mastery while intrinsic drive is what makes our work engaging, fun, and inspiring. Thom seeks to be inquisitive, empathetic, passionate, and socially responsible.

Prior to joining Progressive AE, Thom worked in the metro Detroit area while studying at both Lawrence Technological University and the University of Michigan. Thom joined Progressive AE in 2004 and now serves as a Senior Architectural Designer leading projects through all aspects from visioning and conceptual design through construction.  Thom believes that to be a good designer, you first need to be an architect and have a solid technical knowledge.  He takes great pride in generating not only irresistible spaces and experiences but also great details and systems integration.  He also serves on the Board of Directors for Progressive AE.

“I have been afforded many great opportunities with Progressive and am thankful to have worked with so many great clients to have a positive impact on the communities that they live, work, and play.” Thom has been designer for many award-winning projects at both the AIAGR and AIA Michigan level, including Steelcase WorkLab and the John Ball Zoo Treehouse.  Lastly, Thom has been part of a design team from Progressive to participate in ArtPrize 2010 and 2011 as well as several competitions including the Detroit Riverfront and most recently Reanimate the Ruins to look at how to revitalize the decaying Packard Plant in the City of Detroit. “I believe that as an architect and designer, we have a social responsibility to better our communities, urban spaces, and places. Lastly, we are artists as much as architects, creating installations for our community through engagements like ArtPrize allows us to practice our craft and experiment with technical details and processes which can translate to our architecture.”

On a personal note, Thom has served in the past as a design critic at LTU and U of M. He is currently an adjunct design instructor at Kendall College of Art and Design in the Interior Design Program. Lastly, Thom also serves on his church Board of Directors and volunteers as much as time will allow.
