AIA Grand Rapids Annual Business Meeting & Opening of 2020 Elections
Tuesday, November 5, 2019 | 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in the AIA Grand Rapids Chapter.  Please join the AIA Grand Rapids Board of Directors for our Annual 2019 Business Meeting. We will be closing our Open Nominations period for our Annual Election and outlining what we have accomplished in 2019 as well as where we are headed in 2020.

Each year, your AIA Grand Rapids Board of Directors is faced, as is every organization, with the need to find and develop new leadership. The AIAGR Board is a great way to meet others passionate about advancing the profession of architecture within our community.  As a Board Member, you will learn more about the many ways that the AIA supports the professional growth of architects and help continue to bolster that support.  I urge all of you to consider a Board position, and I especially urge young professionals to become involved.  If you know a young professional in your firm who you think would be a good fit for a new generation of leadership, please forward this to them and encourage them to become involved.

The Board is asking that you consider running yourself, or nominating others, to serve.  The common question: What is the commitment of time?  Each officer attends the monthly Board Meeting typically held the first Tuesday of each month from September to June, with the specific meeting time to be determined by the Board of Directors.  Board members are also strongly encouraged to attend chapter programs to actively engage with members.  For specific activities related to the position, 4-12 hours per month can be expected. The chapter Vice President and President can expect 4-16 hours per month, but it fluctuates with the time of the year. 

Following the elections, we will welcome a new Vice President, as Matthew Christie (our current chapter VP) will assume the Presidency, and I will move into the role of Past President.  We would like to thank our current Past President, Matt Slagle, for his service. 

Our nominations period will close during our Annual Business Meeting, which will be held at Progressive AE, 1811 4 Mile Rd NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525on November 5, 2019, at 12 noon.  All AIA Grand Rapids members are invited to attend this meeting.  Please RSVP by clicking the link below:

AIAGR Annual Business Meeting / Opening of Election Registration

The elections will be conducted via online voting through SurveyMonkey, starting in early November 2019.  Therefore, we will now be accepting nominations for the following positions:

Vice President (Year 1)/President-Elect (Year 2)/Past President (Year 3):  3 Year Term (January 2020-December 2022)
Vice Presidential Duties:
January 2020-December 2020

  • Will have opportunity to attend various conferences (paid for by the chapter), including AIA Grassroots 2020, AIA Conference on Architecture A’20, and the AIA Michigan 2020 Annual Meeting & Leadership Retreat.
  • Assist the President with various duties (including AIA National and AIA Michigan issues and AIA Grand Rapids Honor Awards Committee).
  • Perform duties of the President in the event of absence of the President.
  • Provide articles periodically for newsletters.
  • Assist with membership outreach.

 Presidential Duties (Following Term as Vice President):
January 2021-December 2021

  • The President shall exercise general supervision over the affairs of this chapter, except those matters placed by the bylaws or Board of Directors under the administration and supervision of the Secretary and/or the Treasurer.
  • Review Board meeting Agenda(s) and preside at meetings of the chapter and of the Board of Directors.
  • Appoint, with the concurrence of the Board of Directors, all committees and committee chairs.
  • Sign all contracts and agreements to which this chapter is a party.
  • Have charge of and exercise general supervision over the offices and employees of this chapter.
  • Shall perform all other duties usual and incidental to the office.
  • Implement program plan for presidential year.
  • The President shall act as spokesperson of this chapter and as its representative at meetings with other organizations and committees unless otherwise delegated by the Board of Directors.
  • Provide articles periodically for newsletters.
  • Preside at Honor Awards Ceremony and Honor Awards Committee meetings.
  • May have opportunity to attend various conferences (paid by the chapter), including AIA Grassroots 2021, AIA Conference on Architecture A’21, and the AIA Michigan 2021 Annual Meeting & Leadership Retreat.

Past Presidential Duties (Following Term as President):
January 2022-December 2022

  • Assure continuity of chapter strategy and assist with transition.
  • Maintain a voting position on the Board of Directors.
  • Help to plan the Annual AIAGR Golf Outing.
  • Membership outreach.
  • Chair the AIAGR 2022 Honor Awards Committee.
  • Provide articles periodically for newsletters.
  • Assist the President with significant events (AIA National/Michigan issues).
  • May have opportunity to attend various conferences (paid by the chapter), including AIA Grassroots 2022, AIA Conference on Architecture A’22, and the AIA Michigan 2022 Annual Meeting & Leadership Retreat.

Again, we want to thank all AIA Grand Rapids based firms who have supported their team members' involvement with our organization.  I look forward to seeing who comes forward to help our Board advance the profession of architecture in our community.
