Please join AIA Grand Rapids and Progressive AE for a hard hat tour of the new Downtown Market. Modeled after other successful public markets in cities such as Seattle and San Francisco, the Grand Rapids Downtown Market is a mixed-use, indoor/outdoor development that combines facilities for food production and retailing, farmer produce distribution, tastings, a seasonal outdoor farmers’ market, as well as food and health education. It’s the first LEED-certified market in the country. The Downtown Market is being built by Pioneer Construction and is funded as a public/private partnership initiated by Grand Action, the same privately funded nonprofit that spearheaded the Van Andel Arena and the DeVos Place Convention Center. The outdoor market opened in May, while the building opening is expected early July.
If you haven’t visited the outdoor market yet or seen the press, you may have heard about the project at last year’s AIA presentation River to Markets: GR's Rising Urban Community at the Wealthy Street Theatre. The project also made the New York Times in this article.
